Sound design for theater
There are basically two different skills required for sound design in theater today: sound reinforcement and sound effects design. I bring expertise in both aspects of sound technology to every project with which I am involved.
I've been doing sound for live music and theater since 1981. In the 90's at Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon, I introduced the first digital mixing and automation system for a show that had previously required the operator to remember and dependably execute about two hundred moves in a ninety minute show.
In 1997 I went with the show to London, England for a run during the Covent Garden Musical Theatre Festival.
Since 2000, at San Francisco Opera's sound department, I have assisted on several world premiere productions, including extensive use of sampler based effects and sound reinforcement.
In 2004, I produced cues for a Shotgun Players' production of Quills, a fictional story revolving around the Marquis de Sade's stay in a mental hospital. Among many unique sound elements for this play, one cue calls for us to imagine that the Marquis' hands and feet are being chopped off with an axe in the dark!
